REAL COOL STORIES (week ended 2/9/19)
In sports – Lindsey Vonn ended her amazing skiing career in typical Lindsey fashion – on the medal stand. This time it was a Bronze medal in the 2019 World Championships in Sweden. The result was just a few days since a crash in the Super G which left her with a black eye and some bruised ribs and three months after tearing a knee ligament. After the event she said, “Of course I’m sore. Even before the crash I was sore. So I’m just sore on top of sore. My neck is killing me. But at the end of the day no one cares if my neck hurts. They only care if I win. I knew that I was capable of pushing through the pain one last time and I did that. Every athlete has their own obstacles and I faced mine head on today and I conquered them.”
She finished her career with 82 World Cup wins (second all-time) and was a four time Olympian (with a Gold medal in 2010). Her first World Cup win was back in 2007.
Just how great was her career? She won more than any other woman in history. Her medal finish extended her own record as the oldest to medal in the Worlds. In other words – she is the BEST ever.
The tough part of the story is the many injuries and rehabs that Lindsey has gone through. She has broken several bones and endured six knee surgeries. Number 7 should happen in the near future.
After breaking her humerus she couldn’t pick up a pen for months. She taped her ski poles to her hands when she returned to the slopes. Her knees are a mess. She stretches and gets on a stationary bike for a half hour before her legs can function again.
In her recent statement she wrote, “My body is beyond repair and isn’t letting me have the final season I dreamed of. My body is screaming at me to STOP and it’s time to listen.”
Lindsey Vonn should be remembered as the best woman skier of all time and one of the greatest competitors ever!
A real, cool story!
In life – I did something I haven’t done in a long time. I did NOT watch the State of the Union address, the rebuttal or any coverage. It was refreshing. My hope is that the President and Congress can actually work together to get some things done without all of the partisanship that has gripped the process for a long time!
A real, cool story for me!
